Did You Know...

What synapses are misfiring in my brain, that when I check my email, open up the new ones, respond to them and open another browser....that I think I didn't check my email and feel the urge to check again? Who in the hell am I expecting to hear from within the thirty seconds of my leaving my inbox?

I try to imagine what things were like before I habitually babysat my inbox... I feel like I must have been a much freer, more creative, more social and overall more productive person. I must have been...

But here, in front of the world wide web, in an effort to free myself from the chains of habit, I'm going to bring myself to account:

It's true that it's important to check your email. One must retrieve pertinent information. But it's possible that you have formed an addiction that stretches beyond the boundaries of reason into the territory of massive procrastination and compulsion. Take a walk, read that book, invite that cute neighbor out for a coffee. But Frankie, for the love of God and cyber traffic, check your empty inbox later.
