Am I going to go away and spend money? or Will I stay in town and save money? Count yourself lucky if you can take advantage of the third option: going away and saving. I have opted for staying and saving and what better way to do that than to take on a roommate.
Craigslist yielded Alice; a youthful, bright, shy young lady with a lovely sense of humor. She speaks French...which excited me beyond the beyond and got me thinking about all sorts of things....like
french linens
and Robespierre and how I'm so happy I didn't live in Paris then.
It made me think about baguettes
and how Marie Antoinette could eat whatever she wanted and still look like this...because french women just do that...
Speaking french makes me think of french wine...
and long distance correspondence and how I nearly cried when I saw the Eiffel Tower for the first time...
But Alice is actually from Switzerland, which is what I try to remember when I get carried away with these personal romantic notions about France. Last night, was the first time the two of us had the opportunity to hang out a bit at home and our conversation went something like this...
F: Let's speak in French.
A: Yes! Ok.
F: in very bad French Quand tu sont dans tes amis, est-ce que tu parle Francais ou Anglais?
A: In French! It's bad, but we can't help it! But you'll help me with my English so it's ok.
(silence)
A: Facebook is bad...
F: Oui.
ADDENDUM: The National gets a First Listen on NPR. Hear the much anticipated 'High Violet' and contemplate making love to someone...anyone, really. It's that good. "Runaway" is a personal favorite.
