The New Museum, located on Bowery, is Manhattan's only museum solely dedicated to contemporary art. On Thursday evenings between 7 and 9 p.m. it's free. So on the wings of a seventy degree breeze, I made my way to 235 Bowery for some culture.
Currently on view is "Ricane Neunschwander: A Day Like Any Other". The Brazilian artist "merges painting, photography, film, sculpture, immersive installations, and participatory actions", stressing the relationship between art and viewer by inviting the public to activate the work. My heart always palpitates slightly when I find I can actually step into artwork, and here there was no shortage of opportunities to interact.
My Favorite Parts: On the third floor sat a forensic artist sitting with visitors and drawing their first loves as they were described. The pictures sketched will become a permanent part of the exhibit. On the ground floor was a room; its walls entirely covered with bright colored ribbons. Entitled "I Wish Your Wish", visitors were invited to choose a 'wish ribbon' and tie it around their wrist; replacing the space from which they took the wish, with a personal hand written one. Tradition has it that when the wish is fulfilled the ribbon will fall off... There's something magical and deeply personal about being given something and giving something up.
If you'd like a taste of the exhibit, but can't make it to the museum check out The New Museum's website for an interactive feature H E R E .
The windows of my apartment are open for the first time in about a week. The scent of charcoal grills are wafting through the living room, and peremptory fireworks are exploding somewhere nearby. Keep your wishes close. Happy 4th.
