Pictured above is my first attempt at homemade granola. Chopped nuts, raisins, coconut, orange zest, melted butter and honey all made an appearance, however clumsily, in this batch of baked oats and I have to say that the outcome, however uncertain at the outset, was delicious. July has been, in many ways, much the same way. It has been full of new acquaintances, time spent with dear acquaintances, unexpected detours, and the sweetness of high summer, despite the uncertainty of an open schedule... Highlights include, but are not limited to:
Beginners on a stormy afternoon and a Miranda July sighting in the same week. I swear that couple is targeting me for their box office gain. Can't wait to see The Future.
Yoga practice is once again making an appearance in my early morning routine. How could it not when I have such a pretty place as a studio?
Tyne Daly in "Master Class" is a master class.
The Fourth of July with dear friends, cheese cake, deafening fireworks overhead, and playing in the ocean.
The East River Park is this untapped oasis that I've only just discovered. I'm overjoyed. The prettiest soccer-players and the prettiest views of the river are there in abundance.
Taking in Real Estate's new single "It's Real" while drinking tea and languishing in front of my air conditioner.
Welcoming my sister home from Greece, after a 6 month stint away.
House sitting in Williamsburg for two cats named Mingus and Monk, who are as cool as their namesakes.
Reading, reading, reading.
And so here we are - smack dab in the middle of a month that has been sweet, honey-gold, and a little nutty. My favorite, Pema Chodron, writes: "Rejoicing in ordinary things is not sentimental or trite... Each time we drop our complaints and allow everyday good fortune to inspire us, we enter the warrior's world."
In other words, there ain't a thing wrong with granola.
